Successful Dual Pediatric Kidney Transplant Performed at Fundeni Clinical Institute

Two children received life-saving kidney transplants at Fundeni from a single pediatric donor. Postoperative evolution is favorable.

On Tuesday, July 15, two pediatric kidney transplants were successfully performed at the Center for Urology, Nephrology, and Renal Transplantation of the Fundeni Clinical Institute in Bucharest. The recipients were Alexandra (13 years old) and Eric (10 years old), both previously enrolled in a hemodialysis program.

Each child received a healthy kidney from the same pediatric donor, declared brain-dead. According to the medical team, both children are recovering well postoperatively, with renal function improving toward optimal parameters and a positive medical prognosis. Full reintegration into daily life is expected.

“Even when tragedy devastates a family through the loss of their child, the spirit of giving and love for life can transform tears of sorrow into tears of hope for others in need. This dual pediatric transplant performed earlier this week at Fundeni reaffirms that organ donation remains a supreme act of will, empathy, and understanding—one that restores the natural course of life for others,” said Academician Ioanel Sinescu, Head of the Center for Urology, Nephrology, and Renal Transplantation at Fundeni Clinical Institute.

The surgeries were carried out by a multidisciplinary team from both Fundeni Clinical Institute and the “Grigore Alexandrescu” Emergency Hospital for Children, comprising surgeons, nephrologists, anesthesiologists, and immunologists.
