SCJU Târgu Mureș joins the sudden cardiac death prevention programme and receives a €1 million investment to expand cardiac intensive care capacity.
The County Clinical Emergency Hospital Târgu Mureș has been included in the national sudden cardiac death prevention programme, enabling the implantation of internal cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) in patients at high risk of fatal arrhythmias, announced Prof. Theodora Benedek, Head of the Cardiology Clinic.
Local access to ICD implantation
According to Prof. Benedek, the inclusion of the cardiology centre in the Ministry of Health-funded programme will allow patients in the region to benefit from life-saving devices without travelling to other centres.
Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators continuously monitor heart rhythm and automatically intervene when malignant arrhythmias occur, significantly reducing the risk of sudden cardiac death, one of the leading causes of mortality in patients with complex cardiac disease.
Expansion of the coronary intensive care unit
At the same time, the Coronary & Cardiac Critical Care Unit (USTACC) will be expanded through a project financed by the Health Programme, coordinated by the Ministry of Investments and European Projects.
The €1 million investment will provide state-of-the-art medical equipment and increase capacity to 16 beds, representing a 60% rise in treatment capacity for critically ill cardiac patients.
Access to advanced life-saving therapies
The new equipment will enable the use of advanced therapies such as ECMO, ultrafiltration and other modern circulatory and respiratory support methods, essential in the management of severe heart failure and acute complications.
Reducing inequalities in access to care
According to Prof. Benedek, the programme expansion and infrastructure investment will reduce travel distances and financial burdens for patients requiring complex procedures, improving regional access to advanced cardiac care.
“Each additional bed means a life that can be saved,” she emphasised, highlighting the leading role of the Târgu Mureș centre in the care of critically ill cardiac patients.
