Romania joins the global stem cell donor network, enabling faster matching of compatible donors for patients with severe hematologic diseases.
The Government has approved, at the proposal of the Ministry of Health, the decision on interconnecting the National Registry of Voluntary Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors with similar international networks and on accrediting immunogenetics and histocompatibility laboratories.
According to the Ministry, this measure strengthens Romania’s active role in the global stem cell donor network — a vital link that gives patients a better chance to find a compatible donor anywhere in the world.
The approved funding will allow Romania to connect to the international database “Search & Match Service”, used worldwide to search for and match hematopoietic stem cell donors. Moreover, Romanian laboratories will gain European recognition through an accreditation process aligned with international standards.
The Ministry of Health emphasizes that hematopoietic stem cell transplantation represents a real chance at life for patients diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, severe aplastic anemia, and other serious hematologic diseases. “We will continue to support the development of the National Registry and international cooperation so that every patient who needs a transplant can receive the necessary treatment,” the institution stated.
