Revolutionary surgery in the treatment of ovarian cancer, in Oradea

The complex surgery took place on February 28, 2025, and concluded successfully after approximately 5 hours.

The patient, a 54-year-old woman from Oradea, had previously undergone surgery abroad, but the cancer had recurred, presenting multiple intra-abdominal tumor lesions (peritoneal carcinomatosis). The medical team led by Dr. Dănuț Dejeu, head of the General and Oncological Surgery Department, decided on excising all visible tumors and applying the HIPEC treatment, which involves administering heated chemotherapy directly into the abdomen at 43 degrees Celsius.

The HIPEC procedure allows the local administration of a high concentration of chemotherapy, significantly reducing general side effects and substantially improving patient prognosis. The intervention was performed using advanced equipment and consumables donated to the hospital by businessman Ștefan Kopanyi, ensuring the patient incurred no costs.

The medical team also included Dr. Anita Mureșan (general surgery), Dr. Adriana Dobrescu (anesthesiology), and Dr. Amalia Hora (medical oncology). This procedure represents a significant advancement for oncology patients in the region, who previously had to resort to private or foreign clinics, where costs frequently exceed 20,000 euros.

Thus, SCJU Bihor becomes one of Romania’s medical centers adequately equipped for complex interventions of this type, potentially increasing life expectancy for patients with peritoneal metastases from a few months to several years, or even leading to cures for specific forms of peritoneal cancer.
