Romania’s Health Ministry paid 438.1 million lei for NRRP projects and allocated 79.2 million lei to the cardiovascular centre in Târgu Mureș.

Romania’s Ministry of Health announced that it made payments totalling 438.1 million lei during the week ending on 26 June 2026 for investments financed through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The ministry also signed 19 addenda supporting the continuation of digitalisation and healthcare-associated infection prevention projects.

The funds were allocated to hospital and outpatient infrastructure projects, the digitalisation of healthcare facilities and institutions under the authority of the Ministry of Health, the modernisation of family doctors’ practices and the expansion of neonatal intensive care units.

A tranche of 79.2 million lei was transferred for the continuation of construction work on the new Cardiovascular Surgery Centre at the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases and Transplantation in Târgu Mureș.

Funding for hospitals, family doctors’ practices and patient safety

According to the Ministry of Health, the 438.1 million lei paid during the week was allocated to several categories of investments financed through the NRRP.

These include the construction and modernisation of hospital infrastructure, the digitalisation of hospitals and administrative institutions within the healthcare system, as well as the renovation and equipping of family doctors’ practices across the country.

Additional funds are intended for the purchase of equipment designed to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infections and for the expansion or equipping of neonatal intensive care units.

“The amounts paid confirm that the NRRP projects have moved from paper into reality. We are talking about active construction sites, equipment that is beginning to reach hospitals and a profound transformation of the conditions in which Romanians receive treatment, from the family doctor’s practice to the most complex neonatal intensive care units,” said Interim Health Minister Attila Cseke.

Deadlines extended for nine hospital digitalisation projects

During the same week, the Ministry of Health signed 19 addenda aimed at unblocking or continuing investments in digitalisation and patient safety.

Nine of them extend the implementation periods for hospital digitalisation projects, allowing information systems to be fully installed and made operational.

Another nine addenda increase the value of digitalisation projects carried out by institutions under the authority of the Ministry of Health by including the VAT component in their budgets.

One additional addendum extends the implementation period of a project aimed at reducing healthcare-associated infections, allowing the procurement of equipment to be completed.

79.2 million lei for the Cardiovascular Centre in Târgu Mureș

Of the announced payments, 79.2 million lei was transferred for work on the new Cardiovascular Surgery Centre at the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases and Transplantation in Târgu Mureș.

The project includes a modern operating theatre, intensive care units adapted to current safety standards and medical pathways designed to manage major cardiovascular emergencies.

The Ministry of Health said that the investment is intended to improve access to complex surgical procedures, reduce waiting times and strengthen the role of the Târgu Mureș institute in cardiovascular surgery and organ transplantation.

“By bringing payments up to date and accelerating the use of NRRP funds, we are demonstrating the Ministry of Health’s firm commitment to supporting contractors and completing major hospital infrastructure projects. Romanian patients have the right to be treated at home, according to European standards, in safe facilities equipped with state-of-the-art technology,” Attila Cseke said.

The Ministry of Health stated that it would continue monitoring the implementation schedules of the projects to ensure the use of European funding and the completion of the investments undertaken through the NRRP.
