European-Standard Modernization for the Neurology Department of Galați County Hospital

The Neurology Department of Galați County Hospital has been modernized, now offering new equipment and specialized care. The next step: thrombectomy for advanced stroke treatment.
The Neurology Department and the Acute Stroke Therapy Unit at the „Saint Andrew the Apostle” Galați County Emergency Clinical Hospital have been upgraded and equipped to the highest standards, ensuring patients have access to fast and efficient treatment, the Galați County Council announced on Monday.
„The Acute Stroke Therapy Unit now has eight new beds, each equipped with a monitoring system, infusion pumps, and oxygen therapy consoles. Additionally, the department features cutting-edge equipment, including anti-bedsore mattresses, a medical lift for overweight patients, hand hygiene devices, and a high-performance functional exploration laboratory. The medical staff, trained in specialized care, ensures rapid and effective treatment,” stated representatives of the Galați County Council.
The Clinical Neurology Department has also undergone modernization, providing patients with rooms equipped with private bathrooms, televisions, refrigerators, and emergency alarm buttons for enhanced comfort and safety. The unit also includes dedicated rooms for treating multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and post-stroke neurological rehabilitation.
Thrombectomy: The next step in Stroke treatment
According to the Galați County Council, the modernization of medical infrastructure follows the international recognition of the Clinical Neurology Department, which has received two Gold Awards from the European Stroke Organization for its excellence in stroke treatment.
„In stroke treatment, every second counts. With this modernized unit, patients will receive rapid and specialized care directly in the dedicated department, without overloading the Intensive Care Unit. We are saving lives, improving patient recovery, and providing modern treatment conditions. This is another crucial step in our strategy to transform the Galați Emergency Hospital into a nationally renowned medical institution,” said Costel Fotea, President of the Galați County Council.
Another key objective is implementing the thrombectomy procedure—a groundbreaking intervention that removes the clot blocking cerebral circulation, significantly increasing the chances of full recovery for stroke patients.
Since the launch of the thrombolysis program at Galați County Hospital, 460 procedures have been performed, many of which have resulted in the complete remission of neurological symptoms. The modernization of the Neurology Department and the Stroke Unit is part of a broader investment strategy in the local healthcare system, aimed at providing high-quality medical services that meet European standards for patients in Galați and the surrounding region.
In Romania, stroke is the leading cause of disability and the second leading cause of mortality. Statistics indicate that one in six Romanians will experience a stroke.
