A new heart transplant performed at Floreasca Emergency Hospital marks another success for the national transplant program. The 56-year-old patient is recovering well under the care of the team led by Prof. Dr. Horațiu Moldovan.
On July 10, 2025, the Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic of the „Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, based at the Bucharest Emergency Clinical Hospital (Floreasca), successfully performed a complex heart transplant procedure. The intervention offered a new lease on life to a 56-year-old man suffering from end-stage heart failure.
The donor heart was retrieved during a multi-organ procurement procedure carried out at the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Horațiu Moldovan and his team. The transplant was subsequently performed at Floreasca by the same surgical team, with the support of a multidisciplinary group including cardiovascular surgeons, resident physicians, scrub nurses, perfusionists, and intensive care specialists.
The patient has been closely monitored postoperatively by teams from anesthesiology, intensive care, and cardiology. His recovery is progressing favorably: on postoperative day two, he is conscious, cooperative, and clinically stable.
„We extend our sincere thanks to the management teams at SCUB and SUUB, as well as to the National Transplant Agency for their essential logistical support — and most importantly, to the donor’s family, whose generosity and altruism made this life-saving intervention possible,” the medical team stated.
This procedure reaffirms the high level of expertise within Romanian transplant teams and the critical importance of institutional collaboration in saving lives through organ transplantation.
„The transplant surgery was performed by Prof. Dr. Habil. Horațiu Moldovan, assisted by cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Silvia Preda, along with resident doctors Dr. Robert Țigănașu and Dr. Cristina Dumitru, and scrub nurse Mihaela Bușilă. The anesthesia and intensive care team included Dr. Alexandra Voicu and Dr. Claudiu Ciobotaru, assisted by residents Dr. Alexandru Alexandrescu and Dr. Cosmin Niță. Cardiopulmonary bypass and graft protection were managed by perfusionists Cristina Condrache and Giuliana Chirilă, with support from perfusionist Victor Pavel. Pre- and post-operative cardiology care was ensured by Dr. Claudia Nica (senior cardiologist), Dr. Andrada Bogdan (senior interventional cardiologist), and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oana Fronea (senior cardiologist). As of the second postoperative day, the patient is in favorable condition, conscious and cooperative.”
